Default What does a Clerk of Works do?

Clerk of Works is an employee who supports construction quality through inspection. The primary duty of clerk of works is to look the quality and safety of construction site and check whether the building plans are properly followed. Clerk of Works must inspect work on site regularly and verify the quality of building materials. Their responsibilities include identification of defects and give remedial suggestions. They have to monitor and report work progress to construction managers and clients. Supervising the workforce on building site during a project is also a major duty of client of works.

Clerk of Works is required to meet other construction staff like contractors, engineers and surveyors. The role and responsibility of this category is well defined in standard forms of contract.
