Default Qualifications required to become an Estimator

Estimators usually start their career as technicians, surveying assistants, administrator, etc in the construction and manufacturing sectors. They also usually have qualifications like BTEC HNC/HND or degree in civil engineering, construction, structural engineering, etc. The courses they take usually include contracting, estimating, and other subjects relevant to cost estimation. Another option is to start as an apprentice under an estimator.

After you join a construction or manufacturing company as an estimator, your employer will usually provide you a structured training program. You will also be required to take qualifications like NVQ in Project Control, Construction Contracting Operations, etc. You can also work your way to qualifications in Site Management. After a few years of experience, you can apply for a membership at the Association of Cost Engineers (ACostE), where you can find the resources and networking opportunities to keep you updated to the latest trends and developments.
