Default What does a Fishing Vessel Skipper do?

Fishing vessel skippers are in charge of fishing boats that go out to catch fish from UK fishing harbours. They operate different types of fishing boats – inshore, limited area and unlimited area vessels. Skippers are responsible for planning routes, overseeing operation of equipments and navigation. They are also responsible for making sure there is a profit from the fishing trip. You are also responsible for the safety of the vessel and the crew. You keep in contact with onshore agents.

It is your responsibility to make sure your fishing vessel follows international maritime and fishing laws. You should also be knowledgeable about operating communication devices, navigation equipment and sensors. You may work on small boats or on big trawlers that go into international waters.
