Qualifications required to becoming a Forklift Truck Operator
Truck operators need not clear any formal qualifications. Employers prefer candidates who completed forklift training course. Applicants have to be 16 years old. Due to licence issues employers opt for candidates above 18 years. Those with previous experience in ware house or depot can have preference. Mathematical skill can be an advantage in calculating weights and distance. Valid driving licence is mandatory for operating trucks in public roads. Apprenticeship schemes are available and can be used for entry. Employers usually provide in house forklift training for a period of three to five days. Training session is followed by a test covering equipment checks, maneuvering in confined spaces with and without a load and stacking plus unloading items at different heights. The Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT), Construction Skills, Lantra Awards .National Plant Operators Registration Scheme Ltd, The Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) Ltd and The Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR) are certain organizations approved by health and safety commission to monitor training providers. Experienced staffs are also asked to attend the course which covers areas like health and safety legislation, training and assessment methods, and report writing.
