Default What does a Health Records Clerk do?

A health records clerk is responsible for keeping patients records and medical records for easy access and reference for medical professionals and other staff. They use computers and filing systems to organise reports and records. They are responsible for sending test samples to labs, and updating patient data and reports with medical test reports. He/she will also be responsible for handling hospital administration and keeping tabs of admissions, transfers, discharges and deaths.

Depending on the size of the hospital, you might be delivering all these duties or specialising in any one area – like entering data to computer database or overseeing administration duties. If the hospital provides 24 hour service or if your hospital provides trauma care or accidents/emergency services, you will be working in shifts. Otherwise, you will have regular office hours – morning to evening, Monday through Friday.
