Default What does a Hospital Play Specialist do?

A hospital play specialist is someone who helps children at a hospital. They help the children manage pain, fear, etc during their time at the hospital. The basic premises is to use play as a means of distracting children from the treatments they receive. You may sometimes let children know what procedures they have gone through and why. In some cases, your duties can include helping children settling in.

Other duties include helping children develop their skills – cognitive skills, expression, etc. Prolonged hospital stays can take their toll on the children and you will need to help children keep themselves active with their hobbies, skills, etc. Your duty is to help children who need prolonged hospital stays or major clinical procedures to stay calm and in a playful atmosphere. You may also teach crafts and works, which the children can practice and develop. Talking to the parents and caregivers about the importance and requirements of play is also included in your job.
