What does a Housing Officer do?
Housing officers work for local authorities or housing associations. They organize daily maintenances of rented properties. They over see property exchanges and allocate vacant accommodations. They make regular site inspections to ensure the proper working state and repair requirements of the properties. They assess the needs of people applying for housing. Housing officers also deals with anti-social behavior, squatters and broken tenancy agreements. They refer tenants to appropriate sources of benefits and welfare advisers. Housing officers are in charge of setting rents and deal with payments as well arrears. They also arrange legal actions for when other forms of rent recovery fails. Housing officers also have to prepare statistical information and generate reports. They also act as supporters for tenants’ group by attending their meetings as council representatives. Housing officers usually work closely with social services departments and welfare rights organizations.
