Default Qualifications required to becoming a Library Assistant

Good GCSEs (A-C) or equivalent is required for library assistants. In industrial as well as commercial information centres A level qualifications will be mandatory. Specialist knowledge in languages or science subjects is needed to become a specialist library assistant. Personal skills are highly regarded than the academic qualification for library assistants. Apprenticeship schemes can be used for entering the profession. Library assistants will be provided with supervised training under senior library assistants or librarian. You can also work towards NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Information and Library Services or City & Guilds (7371) Progression Award in Library and Information Services while working. Experienced library assistants can apply for Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) Certifications. Certified persons become associate members of CILIP and can become librarians.
