Default What skills are needed to becoming a Merchant Navy Engineering Officer?

Apart from engineering, technical and IT skills, you also need to possess good communication skills, team working capabilities and good organisational skills. You should be able to prioritise works and assign jobs to team members. Good knowledge of practical mechanical skills and workmanship is essential. You are also required to be away from family for quite longer periods. However, such periods are also matched with long leaves. A willingness to work under uncomfortable conditions like confined spaces or cold environments. Physical fitness, alertness, confidence in taking decisions and ability to lead are all essential. You will also need to handle the mechanical tasks yourself – machinery of all kinds including communication devices, engine, electrical components and more.
