What qualifications are required to becoming a Merchant Navy Rating
Merchant Navy Ratings can be of different types and you should be qualified for the position you are applying for. Relevant experience in engineering, freight handling, navigation, catering, cargo handling, etc are important. The shipping companies also look for educational qualifications like three or four GCSEs for English, maths, physics or equivalent. You apply to the ship companies or the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (civilian fleet operated by Navy). Your company usually sponsors you through the training, which also gives you practical experience working onboard a ship.
Medical fitness is also essential. Once absorbed as a merchant navy rating, you can also take up training to improve your qualifications. Marine Vessel Support at Level-2 with either deck or engineering option. You can also get Efficient Deck Hand Certificate after completing the course. There are also chances of getting promoted to trainee officer by taking the officer training programmes.
