Qualifications required to becoming a Osteopath
A professional osteopath needs relevant qualifications as well as approval of General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Medical professionals can start working as osteopaths with a short post graduate course. Graduation in osteopathy or osteopathic medicine needs five GCSEs including English, maths and science. A level knowledge in human biology, physics, chemistry as well as physiology is also needed. Qualified osteopaths can register in GosC provided character and health references. Once started working further improvements can be done with academic courses, clinical and practical trainings. Advanced courses in basic medical sciences (anatomy and physiology), patient skills (psychology and communication skills), clinical medicine, pathology, diagnosis and treatment planning or osteopathic techniques, concepts and philosophy are helpful. A GosC’s registered osteopath needs 30 hours of learning as a part of continuing professional development (CPD).
