What does a Paralegal do?
Paralegal also known as legal assist in some countries, are appointed to assist lawyers in their legal work. They are actually non lawyers who do legal work. Paralegal are not authorized by government and so cannot give legal advice. This is the main difference between a lawyer and a paralegal. Some of the major responsibilities of paralegal includes conducting client interviews and maintain general contact with the client and this must be done only under the supervision of attorney. The clients also must be aware of the status and function of the paralegal. A paralegal may conduct investigations, statistical and documentary research and legal research. Drafting legal documents, correspondence and pleadings are also included in their job responsibilities.
The duty of a paralegal extends to summarizing depositions, interrogatories, testimony, attending execution of wills, real estate, closing, and administrative hearings and trails with the attorney.
