Default Qualifications required to become a Patent Attorney

You need a degree in science, engineering or technical subjects. Though not mandatory, it is beneficial to have a postgraduate qualification in scientific or engineering subjects. You can get training as a patent attorney if you have experience in the engineering or technology sectors. You can take a post graduate qualification in Intellectual Property Law, which covers UK, US and international patent and copyright laws. It is beneficial to have such a qualification, as most of the employees will consider you seriously for the post.

After you start working as a patent attorney, you can also gain further knowledge and training. You can work towards European Qualifying Exam to be qualified as a European patent attorney. You need to develop skills in French and/or German while serving European clients.
