Default What does a Port Operative do?

A port operative can work in different categories. Stevedores will work in container ships. They will also work in roll-on/roll-off ferries. They will load, unload and transfer cargoes using cranes, trailer wagons and forklift trucks. They will handle conveyers, suction pumps and maintains the lifts. Passenger operatives hold another set of duties. They will help the passengers getting on /off the ships and check their travel documents.

They will provide information on whether conditions and sailing timings. Passenger operatives will also take care of the luggage and arrange vehicles for the passengers. Another interesting area is marine operations. Marine operatives will have experience in rowing boats and also in pilot launches. They will arrange marker buoys in the harbour. Refueling and cleaning the vessels are also their duties. They will also shift passengers and crew to the offshore anchored ships. They will have to supervise the operations of VHF radio and radars. In small leisure ships a port operative will perform all these duties simultaneously.
