What do Prison Officers do?
Prison officers are responsible for supervising everyday activities at a prison, security, discipline and administration. They are responsible for keeping people sentenced for various crimes securely in the prison they have control of. They also try help prisoners adapt themselves as law abiding citizens. They work closely with other officers, prison instructors, prison governors, etc to ensure the inmates stay disciplined and are on the right track to leading normal lives after released.
It is the responsibility of the prison officer to oversee every item of day to day activities – including meals, showers and exercise for inmates, settling in new prisoners, ensuring security, directing restraint procedures when needed, looking out for and avoiding chances of inmates harming themselves, etc. They work in shifts and their nature of job warrants their services in different prisons. They report the behaviour of inmates and implement programmes like vocational training programs for the prisoners. They also oversee the activities for rehabilitation. At some stages, you will also be required to handling the training of newly appointed prison officers.
