Default What do a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages do?

Registrars collect and record the information of all births, stillbirths, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. Registrar will collect the details form parents regarding birth registration and issue the birth certificate.

In case of death he / she will check the documents detailing cause of death and will interview a close relative of the dead person or consult a doctor before issuing death certificate. In case of any suspicious circumstances he will inform the authorities. For marriage registration a registrar will interview couples and make sure they are legally able to marry or form civil partnerships.

He/ She will verify the official documents and formal notices of intention which are then signed by the couples in front of registrar. He/She will keep accurate record books and sent official statistics to the general registrars’ office. Registrars can also work as celebrant and conduct ceremonies like funerals, civil partnerships and marriage ceremonies with out the responsibility of registering.
