Default What Skills are needed to become a School Secretary?

Good communication skills are the most important skill you need to possess. You should be comfortable with both verbal and written communication – face to face, over telephone, email, fax and post.

Good computer skills are another requirement. You also need an eye to detail and should be able to prioritise various tasks. You will be dealing with confidential and sensitive information, which you need to handle with respect. Sometimes you will be required to work as part of a team and at times alone. You should be comfortable in both cases.

You should also respect the different personalities of pupils, parents, teachers, other staff, and the various people you come into contact on a day to day basis.
