Default What Does a Trading Standards Officer Do?

A trading standards officer promotes a fair and safe trade/market environment. His/her responsibilities include protecting consumers by offering counsel on consumer law. You will also conduct investigations and take action against offending businesses. It will be your responsibility to deal with issues like counterfeiting, weights & measures, product labelling, animal welfare, etc.

There are specialized job categories. You may be required to visit traders or trade places to investigate consumer or animal welfare complaints. You will ensure product amounts are as described in the label and certify weighing scales are tuned accurately. You will take action against wrong or misleading advertisements. You are responsible for acting on behalf of the consumer and take any case to Court of law in case of serious offences.

You will keep proper records of whatever you do and present them to fair trading officers, consumer advisers, and to the public. In case of going to the Court, you will also prepare strong evidence to prove the offence.
